What is Business Casual?

Business Casual is officially a newsletter for people starting and building their careers, but unofficially it’s a newsletter about work: finding work, the workers, and the workplace.

What should you expect?

Business Casual is published at least once a week and sometimes twice.

It includes:

  • The series Real People, Real Jobs, an unfiltered look at what different jobs are really like. I talk with people about their work — from under-appreciated roles to those at high-profile, well-known companies. In both cases, instead of sharing only the polished, LinkedIn version of the job, we peel back the curtain on what that role is really like, and offer insider tips on how to get there.

  • Once a month, Real People, Real Jobs travels internationally, and I feature someone working in a country outside the U.S.

  • The series The Workplace, where I explore the places we work outside of the office and meet the people working there.

  • In addition, you’ll receive special edition letters on other career topics like curated internship and job opportunities, industry and AI deep dives, and actually useful career planning tools and tips.

Who am I?

I’m Lena, a 27-year-old design strategist based in Los Angeles. My short career has already spanned many different industries and roles. After graduating college, I worked for two years for the Los Angeles Mayor’s Innovation Team as a project manager; later, I transitioned to the private sector, working as a strategy consultant for a large management consulting firm. I took a break to go to grad school, and since then I’ve been working as a freelance design strategist for different public and private sector clients. I’m also the co-founder of Project Yeraz (“Project Dream” in Armenian, my heritage language), a career accelerator for Gen Z Armenians in L.A.
